Many of our cottage owners offer various courses that you can participate in during your self-catering holiday. This gives the holiday a focus but still leaves you time for sightseeing and socialising. The theme varies from outdoor pursuits, creative arts through to psychic. Something for everyone!

Wester Lix Cottages in beautiful Perthshire offer photography courses with accommodation

residential photography coursesAt Wester Lix we offer a range of short courses in photography for both beginners and advanced individuals or groups.

Subjects vary from landscape to portraiture, studio to outdoor and also simple digital processing to Web site building. Tuition is offered in modules that can be tailored to the needs of individuals or groups.

All tuition is supplied by myself being a qualified professional photographer and a member of the British Institute of Professional Photography. (BIPP)

For all guests staying at Wester Lix we offer a complimentary introduction in any of the listed modules.

Modules :

  • Camera basics - from an introduction for the beginner up to advanced camera techniques.

  • Studio Lighting - for portrait and still life studio work using either a professional photographic studio or portable lighting for location work.

  • Outdoor lighting - A short introduction to understanding and controlling natural light to maximize outdoor photography

  • Digital Processing - taking shots from camera into computer applications to prepare for printing and presentation.

  • Digital Manipulation - more advanced techniques in Adobe Photoshop to produce fine art or composite digital images.

  • Web Publishing - finally we can look at how we can take our finished work and publish onto the web.

ECO COURSE at Brignall Mill in the north of England

ECo courses at self-catering Brignall MillAutumn to Winter sessions of this eco course. Jane Weston is running an eco course for people who would like to combine a relaxing mid-week break staying in the Mill near Castle Barnard with an introductory course in Making an Old Building Sustainable.

The course timetable:

We begin at 7 pm on Tuesday night with a welcome dinner cooked with local produce.

  • Session One Wednesday morning 10.00am to 1pm

  • Motivations and First Principles. The old (or historic) building - aesthetics v sustainability, compromise or not? Planning issues and sustainable technologies. Constraints on sustainability in listed buildings and constructive solutions. Tour of the eco-project and discussion of micro-hydro scheme, ground source heat pumps and solar panels. Woodburning to heat. Other possible technologies. Green audit - how to look at your domestic or small business set up from an ecological point of view

  • Afternoon - free time. Opportunity to visit local sites of green/ecological/historical interest (or just relax and enjoy the Mill and its beautiful surroundings)

  • Session Two Thursday morning 10.00am to 1pm

  • Tour local domestic wind generating site and learn about it. Return to Mill. Session on Practicalities/Planning a sustainable project. Resources and economics. Green possibilities for the future. Planning issues now and in the future. How to research your project and find suppliers.

  • Afternoon - free time. Explore a beautiful unspoilt area in the north of England with which you are probably unfamiliar!

  • Friday morning - depart after breakfast.

  • All accommodation is on a bed and breakfast basis in the Mill (rated 5 star) one twin and one double room available. We can accommodate one single person in addition in our home.
    Total cost is £240 per person. Courses will be two people minimum and five maximum leaving plenty of room to address each person's interests in depth. Mill kitchen available for guests to prepare their own light lunches.
