Porthleven is one of the most attractive villages on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. The sheltered harbour is picturesque and visitors soon realise that part of its appeal is created by the waves crashing fiercely against the harbour wall. The waves around Porthleven are awe-inspiring and many tourists spend a while just watching the waves or trying to photograph them coming over the harbour wall. There is a plaque dedicated to the memory of a policeman who was swept into the harbour as a warning to all.

Many of the cottages in the village are holiday lets and Porthleven would be a wonderful base for anyone who would like to paint, take photographs or walk the coastal path. There is a narrow triangular stretch of beach but not suitable for children. An all adult group would appreciate the several good restaurants and the scenic location. There are plenty of wide sandy beaches within easy driving distance, such as Praa Sands, for days on the beach.

Families may wish to note that Flambards theme park is just outside Helston four miles away. Helston also has a boating lake, pubs,  shops and two 24 hour supermarkets  for self-catering essentials.

One of the lovely things about the Lizard Peninsula is the wealth of wild flowers and country and coastal walks. Visit the most southerly point of England at the Lizard to view the lighthouse and marvel at the bright flowering succulents that thrive on the south facing cliffs.
