Book a country cottage in Castleton at the heart of cavern country, in the north of the Peak District. Much tourist activity revolves around the village of Castleton which is also home to the Peak Cavern and a walk through the secret limestone valley up to the hills overlooking Castleton. This is an excellent place to stay, especially if you love hiking or mountain biking.

Castleton

There is quite a lot to do in the village: a visitor centre (by the car park) with a film show about the area, various eateries and pubs, shops, Blue John centre. There are numerous visitors during the summer who come to sightsee, tour the caverns, climb Mam Tor and have a wonderful time.

Castleton is great for family cottage hoidays

This charming stone-built village is ideal for family holidays. Take the children for way-marked walks over stiles and through fields and woodlands to wear them out and avoid the ice cream shops. Threaten them with a visit to the Devil’s Arse if they do not behave. There are some very nice holiday homes to rent in Castleton that are perfect for families. Look for accommodation with a back garden where you could leave the children to play in the fresh air whilst you sip your wine on the sofa.

Remember that children will find every muddy puddle wherever you go, so a holiday home equipped with a washing machine and dryer may be helpful unless you prefer to return home with suitcases full of dirty washing.

There are also large houses to rent for big groups. All those hikers like Castleton because they can sample beer at the various pubs around the town in the evening. All that walking and climbing is thirsty work.
