The Watermill is a Grade II Star Listed, five bedroom house two hours from London. 

It is set on a private island and is secluded and literally surrounded by water and wildlife.  There is a three acre garden, a disused watermill and stables, and a walled garden.  The house is beautifully furnished and decorated and overlooks the millpond and river.  There are 5 bedrooms and accommodation for up to 10 people.

The village is 5 minutes walk and has two pubs, a traditional butcher, a restaurant, cafe, fish and chips, and a general store.

Two sitting rooms, both with comfortable sofas and one with a large open fire and the other with a log burner, TV’s, DVD, stereo

Entrance hall with stone floor and log burner and door through to the mill for hats, coats and boots and extra fridge and freezer

Five bedrooms – four doubles (two adjoining) and a fifth with two singles, most of the bedrooms have TVs.

There are seating areas in several places in the garden.

You might just want to sit and look at the view but there are plenty of things to do.

There is a punt, a two person canoe, and a selection of bicycles.  You are welcome to fish.  We swim, not in the millpond but a little further up river where the water is deeper and clearer.  There is an extensive network of foot and bike trails starting within a few yards of the gate.

Thetford Forest is only a few miles away and other local attractions include:

Wyken Vineyard http://www.wykenvineyards.co.uk/ , 3 miles away, which has a farmer’s market (Saturday mornings) gift shop, cafe and restaurant. 

The nearby village of Walsham-le-Willows has a wine merchant http://www.wattisfieldwines.co.uk/ and a charming butcher and fine food shop http://www.rolfesbutchers.co.uk/. 

Bury St Edmunds, 9 miles away, is a thriving market town with historic centre and Abbey Ruins.  There are markets on Saturdays and Wednesdays in the Butter Market and Cornhill. 

Lavenham 19 miles, and Long Melford 21 miles are historic market towns with antique shops and art galleries.

Newmarket 23 miles, Cambridge 36 miles, London 89 miles, the Suffolk Coast,  Southwold 42 miles and Aldeburgh 40 miles, the Norfolk Coast, Burnham Market 54 miles.

There has been a watermill on this site since before the Doomsday Book.  The river was diverted to form the millpond by the Saxons.  The Romans had a settlement in Ixworth and Boudicca’s Capital was in Thetford.  The present mill dates from 1800 and worked milling wheat until 1946. It still has the wheel and machinery. Guests are welcome to look around but must take care.   It was used as a location in Dad’s Army (Wake up Walmington) and in Vincent Price’s
