If you and your friends and family have a fondness for cheese then you may wish to head over to the village of Cheddar in Somerset. Although the village gave its name to the most popular cheese in the United Kingdom, only one producer of cheddar cheese remains in the settlement. It is still an interesting place to visit for many other reasons, however, as it is located in a serene setting on the edge of the rolling Mendip Hills which is home to the fascinating limestone gorge of Cheddar Gorge. As the largest gorge in the UK, this Site of Special Scientific Interest is brilliant to visit and is home to many caves that are open to the public such as Gough’s Cave. Gough’s Cave is an impressive 90 metres deep and is home to several stalagmites and stalactites as well as the Cheddar Yeo which flows through here and is the larger underground river in Britain. If you and your loved one’s interest in caves increases after a trip down to this eerie gorge, then you should definitely visit the Cheddar Show Caves Museum located in the village. If you happen to enjoy cycling then you could take your bike along the Cheddar Valley Line which was where much of the village’s strawberries were transported up until the late 1960s. Now a cycle path, you and your family can ride along this historical path that is very significant to the village of Cheddar. With woodlands, quarries and ancient buildings, Cheddar makes a very interesting place to visit, and there are lots of cottages and accommodation available to rent for a self-catering holiday here. Sampling some of the local cheese is something that just has to be done when here, and you can enjoy it in the comfort of your rented cottage for a peaceful and perfect break in Cheddar.
