The market town of Conwy in North Wales is a popular tourist destination and is home to many historical sites that make this settlement unique. It is a walled town and features the magnificent Conwy Castle which was built between 1283 and 1289. A charming place for a self-catering break, Conwy benefits from being close to the coast but also less than one mile from the stunning beauty of Snowdonia National Park.


Advice on Cottage Holidays in Conwy Town

Conwy Castle is an incredible structure to visit if you are taking a cottage holiday in the town, and this medieval fortification was originally built as part of the walls that surround the rest of the town. Classed as a World Heritage Site, the castle features high towers and fortified gateways, as well as an impressive kitchen, royal chapel and chambers on the interior of the structure. The views over the sea and the mountains make this castle a must-see if in Conwy.

The National Trust owned Bodysgallen Hall is very close to Conwy Castle and this imposing grade I listed manor house was originally built as a tower house to provide defensive provision for the castle. Most of the house today originates from the 17th century however and the incredible gardens featuring a lily pond and croquet lawn are gorgeous.

Conwy Suspension Bridge is another National Trust property recommended to visit whilst on a cottage break in Conwy. This bridge is remarkable for being one of the first of its kind in the world. The bridge crosses over the River Conwy and can only be accessed by foot, and completed in 1826, it was designed and built by Thomas Telford. Crossing the bridge to the castle is an excellent way to appreciate this marvel of early 19th century engineering.

Another place to visit is Plas Mawr, a 16th century Elizabethan townhouse in Conwy that is open to the public. It has been restored to its original appearance and is thought to be the best-preserved house of its kind in the whole of the UK. A visit here is a must if you have an interest in architecture as the ornamental plasterwork is fascinating and the house itself is simply gorgeous.

Another great place to visit whilst on a self-catering holiday in Conwy is Quay House, otherwise known as The Smallest House in Great Britain. The house has a floor area of 10 by 6 feet and was occupied from the 16th century until 1900. This quaint and tiny house is a fun attraction to visit and you can even enter for a small charge!
