Cottage rentals in Castletownsend, Cork, Ireland

Castletownsend is a stunning village in County Cork on the south western coast of Ireland and was originally based around a castle built by soldier and politician Richard Townsend in the 17th century. Incredibly, his ancestors still live in the village and the castle is still standing although not open to visitors.  With a rich history and gorgeous scenery at every turn, Castletownsend could be a great choice for a rural cottage holiday close to the coast.

About Castletownsend for Cottage Holidays

Castletownsend is a wonderful, charming little community and there are plenty of things to do here on a self-catering break.  This picturesque part of Ireland features a main high street, where large 18th century homes line the sides. The castle is at the end of this road, as well as pretty Castlehaven Harbour. Taking afternoon strolls down to the harbour is a great way to see this beautiful area, and gathering your loved ones up for a lovely and relaxing drink overlooking the boats moored at the quayside is a perfect way to spend a blissful couple of hours in Castletownsend.

The church of St. Barrahane’s overlooks Castletownsend and is home to an exciting classical music festival which the church has sponsored ever since 1980. St. Barrahane’s also has a number of stained glass windows by illustrator Harry Clarke. These beautiful windows should definitely be seen if you are in Castletownshend as they really are extremely striking.

The eye-catching sea inlet is perfect for yachts and sailing boats due to its sheltered harbour, and during the summer months this makes a lovely and tranquil water activity for those who love the sea or those who wish to try something new while on a cottage break in Castletownsend.
