Rent a farmhouse in the country to sleep 4 people for a fabulous self catering break surrounded by green fields, hills and woodland. Browse the photographs of farmhouses and country cottages shown below and explore their locations. Perhaps the southern reaches of Scotland and the prospect of encountering red squirrels, pine martens and red deer as you explore Galloway Forest on your mountain bike or horse? This is one of those rare areas in Britain without light pollution that make star gazing a pleasurable prospect. Any family holidaying here could explore the wildlife of south west Scotland and try to spot the constellations in the night sky. What a treat for children!

Going south, stay on the east coast in Northumberland and make that trip to Holy Island that you have always promised yourself and rediscover spirituality, whatever your faith or lack of it.

There are plenty of farmhouses all over Britain and there are numerous regional differences. The farmhouses in the north are built of the same materials as other older properties, often of stone. Some of the most attractive feature hardwood windows and woodwork - a most attractive combination. Go to the south of England for whitewashed farmhouses with thatch. Some of the Irish farmhouses are also whitewashed and occasionally thatched although their design may be simpler.

Farmhouses make superb self-catering accommodation; well insulated, airy and spacious, they are comfortable and welcoming.
