Bideford is an estuary town on the river Torridge in north west Devon. The Bideford Long Bridge with 24 spans enables traffic to travel to and fro, from east to west, as the river flows on to join the Taw Estuary and into the Bristol channel. Handsome houses line the banks overlooking riverside. The textile industry flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries enabling merchants to build fine town houses, some of which can be seen in Bridgeland Street. The harbour was a busy port in those days shipping textiles and tobacco. It remains a picturesque spot for tourists to visit and photograph. It's also a popular spot to see in the New Year with thousands of revellers celebrating in the pubs, restaurants, quayside promenade and along the Long Bridge on New Years Eve.
This is also otter country as made famous by Tarka the otter and the Taka Trail for cyclists and walkers. The river Torridge is home to the largest populations of otters in England.
