| Self-catering
holiday accommodation and country cottages in Colchester
Colchester
is England's oldest recorded Roman town; numerous artefacts still
remain. The castle has a permanent exhibition of Roman items on
display. It's highly recommended for families with children because
many of the displays are interactive and children are encouraged to try on costumes, helmets, chain mail, and to
participate in various sections.
Some
of the narrow streets are reminiscent of the Shambles in York and
offer interesting individual shops to browse in. An ancient clock museum
is worth a peek with a worthy collection of historical time pieces.

The
zoo, on the outskirts of Colchester is one of the best in the country.
It's well designed with wide walkways, plenty of interesting
information, falconry displays, several play grounds for children to
relax in between viewing, and food for animal feeding time; it allows
children to get close to some of the animals and participate.
There's
plenty to do for anyone holidaying in the area. Colchester offers a
wide variety of family amusements. For the younger child there
is an enormous soft-play centre called 'Go Bananas', there is a large
leisure centre with pool, and laser games just to mention a few.
The coast and beaches are just a short drive away, as in Constable
Country, and the pretty villages of north Essex.
