The City of Wakefield - self-catering breaks for business or leisure

Wakefield on the River Calder lies in the county of West Yorkshire. It is famous for unusual reasons:

  • Wakefield maximum security prison has contained some notable criminals in its time; such as Ian Huntley and Harold Shipman.
  • There is an annual rhubarb festival because of the quanitity of rhubarb grown in the area.
  • The city is associated with the production of liquorice based 'Pontefract cakes' in the nearby town of Pontefract
  • The Westgate part of Wakefield is said to have the highest density of pubs anywhere, leading to a now established Westgate Pub Crawl.
