Fowl Green Farm is an excellent environment for those who like a variety of country pursuits. These currently include walking, sight seeing, riding, cycling (including, hand-cranked cycling) off road wheelchair driving, bird watching, fishing, painting or sketching.

There are 86 acres of farmland with fields and woods and a stream running through. Come and enjoy watching animals and birds close at hand. We have created footpaths and picnic sites which are accessible to wheelchair users, so all the family can take part together.

  • The farm has many features to interest the visitor but it also provides a base for lots of things to see and do with transport links by road and rail within easy reach. In summer, take the moors bus - travel all day or get on and off in all the small villages stopping off at special sites of interest.

  • If you get off at Grosmont, you can join the steam train over to Goathland, which is Heartbeat country.

  • Or take the train to Whitby, a wonderful fishing harbour, don’t forget to try the fish and chips and bring a crab home for tea. Walk up the 199 steps (or is it 99?) to the abbey which stands high on the cliff top.

  • Alternatively, the small Victorian seaside town of Saltburn is only 7 miles away by road and well worth a visit. Shopkeepers often dress up in Victorian costumes during the summer.

  • Danby Lodge is the North York Moors National Park Centre and is about 5 miles away. This is a great place to find out more about the countryside and it’s all accessible and it’s free. There is a cafe there too, so sit out, enjoy the views and pretend the beautiful old house is yours.

  • If you like beautiful old houses, then Castle Howard, near Malton is well worth seeing. Most people remember it for the setting of the television series Brideshead Revisited.

  • All of the Esk Valley is well served with pubs and cafes, tearooms and restaurants so as you meander through the beautiful old stone villages stop and try them.

  • An exceptional museum is the Ryedale Folk Museum, to be found at Hutton le Hole. Travel back into the past and visit old cruck houses, village shop and post office. History comers alive here from roman times to the 20th century, with regular demonstrations crafts, historic re-enactments and rare breed shows.

  • All of the area is rich in art and crafts and as you travel along the Esk Valley from Kildale, via Commondale, Castleton and on to Whitby, many local artists and crafts people have their work on display and for sale. Check out Peter Baker, marine artist at Westbridge Cottage, Kildale, then move on to Caroline Riley’s Tractor Shed at Commondale and the Montage Studio Gallery at Castleton. They will all be pleased to meet you, show off their work and chat.
  • Travel: Commondale
