The Woodhouse - Ledbury and Bromyard,

SELF-CATERING HOLIDAY OF THE YEAR 2009. ENJOY ENGLAND AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE. English tourism's highest accolade.

2010 Sunday Times 100 Cool Cottages

The Woodhouse is a Grade II* Listed semi-moated medieval hall-house, from the first part of the C15th. It has been restored using traditional techniques and materials including Herefordshire oak, wattle and daub, lime mortar, limewash and casein paint. What remained of the original building was used to provide evidence for the restoration, which was guided by SPAB architect Andrew Thomas and executed largely by the owner, David Furnival. It was featured by the BBC on Radio 4’s Open Country and in The Observer in Feb. 2004.It is also mentioned in The National Commission for Historic Monuments, Pevsner's book on Herfordshire and The book of Ledbury by Joe Hillaby, and can be found on the Images of England website.

Sleeps 8 There are four bedrooms; the Solar bedroom has a stunning king size medieval-style hanging bed with the hangings suspended from the roof timbers. Ensuite bathroom with separate shower. Wardrobe space is provided in medieval pavilion-style enclosures. The room was originally the C15th solar, or main room belonging to the owner of the house. Family suite: two adjoining rooms. Triple room with four-poster bed and a single, adjoining room with single bed and bathroom. These two bedrooms are also open to the roof, and have three quatrefoil-shaped timbered features. Moat bedroom: With its own separate staircase, this has another medieval-style half-tester bed with shower room.

Downstairs : fitted hand-made oak kitchen, designed specifically for the room with replica medieval encaustic-tiled floor. Appliances include an Aga, and Miele fridge, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer, with freezer and microwave. Furniture includes an antique oak table and chairs and a settle. A bay window overlooks the garden. Separate larder. The dining room can dine upto 16 and contains another antique oak table. A Jacobean court cupboard, tapestry and large fireplace give a wonderfully authentic feel to the room which was originally the Great Hall. The sitting room has comfortable seating in two Knole sofas with a leather armchair and a silk-upholstered antique chair. The room's focal point is the fireplace with its woodburning stove (all logs are free), though in Summer, the oriel window overlooking the moat provides beautiful views of the water with its waterlilies, flag irises and rushes. A door opens onto the south-facing terrace which has garden furniture and a barbecue.

Ledbury and Bromyard

Ledbury is probably the prettiest of Herefordshire's small towns, still retaining its medieval burgage layout, with attractive old properties including the timber-framed Market house, built on stilts, and the lovely old coaching inn, The Feathers. It is small enough to walk around easily, and we are fortunate in having a plethora of interesting independent shops rather than rows of High Street chains. We have a nationally acclaimed deli, (but there are two more), three butchers, including one selling rare breed meat, an organic shop, two greengrocers and proper bakers as well as other inviting shops, some found down small alleys hidden away from the main road. We have our own Town Crier, the best Poetry Festival in England (according to Andrew Motion) and we're perfectly positioned for visits to the Three Choirs counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.
