Burggraaf - Beaminster,

We have built two modern design classics within the shells of 18th century traditional farm buildings, complete with swimming pools, steam rooms, saunas, hot tubs, games rooms, large open-plan living rooms, outdoor fireplaces, designer gardens and luxurious furnishings. The idea behind each home is to make your holiday perfect. Each house has six double bedrooms and sleeps 12. Or why not book both for an unforgettable party for 24 friends or family?

Just 23/4 hours from London, West Axnoller is a couple of miles from the charming market town of Beaminster and 6 miles from the beach and the Jurassic Coast. From the top of West Axnoller’s half mile drive, lined with beech, oak and lime trees, you can see the sea at West Bay, beyond the rolling West Dorset countryside. It is a place lost in time designed to relieve you of the stresses of modern living and allow you to unwind and relax in total seclusion and splendour.

This used to be Thomas Hardy Country – but it is probably better-known now as Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall Country. At West Axnoller Farm, beautifully designed kitchens mean you can cook for yourself if you care to or your catering needs can be taken care of by one of several renowned local chefs. Great, locally produced food is a Dorset speciality and you can have one of the many local delis, butchers and green grocers or a supermarket deliver here in time for your arrival.

For your holiday or weekend break, choose West Axnoller for its charm and opulence.

The single-storey Burggraaf is a highly-specified and private luxurious house. With lofty exposed oak beams, glass walls and a fantastic contemporary fireplace. It has six bedrooms, all with high quality superking double beds that can be “unzipped” to provide two single beds and fabulous linen and pillows. All bedrooms are ensuite and have great bathrooms most with baths as well as power showers. Flooring downstairs is underfloor-heated stone.

All rooms are beautifully designed with clean lines and contemporary furnishings. Chrome fittings give the house a sleek, contemporary look. There is elegant lighting, installed by a top designer. Crafted locally, the kitchen has polished stone surfaces, an easy-to-use stainless steel range and gas hobs.

Windows look one side on to your own private courtyard, studded with pleached limes and guarded by tall green oak gates. On the other, you can look out for miles across unblemished rolling Dorset downland.

Burggraaf has a fabulous roman bath style indoor swimming pool, a cedar hot tub and a large room that can seat up to 24 people - ideal if you would like to combine Burggraaf with our other property, Voltaire. Andy and Alo Brake want this to be an unforgettable holiday for you, your family and your friends.

Prices range from £2,250 for weekends and midweeks and from £3,500 to £6,000 for a week

Walk into Voltaire and feel the warmth of the underfloor heating seep up through the stone floor. You will be impressed at once by an interior space that is elegantly lit and furnished. The emphasis throughout is on great design, comfort and luxury.

A two-storey open-plan house, Voltaire offers six bedrooms, all with English oak flooring, sumptuous superking size beds which can be unzipped to provide two single beds dressed with the best quality bed linen and pillows. The bathrooms are fabulous, most with baths as well as power showers, designed to give you all the luxury you would expect in s 5 star hotel.

The kitchen is locally crafted with polished stone surfaces. The living area has a ribbon fire and comfortable squashy sofas for you to relax in.

From Voltaire, south-facing windows overlook fields and a beautiful enclosed garden, including a sunken area and a series of intimate courtyards. An outside fireplace and cedar hot tub allow you to enjoy not just the warm summer evenings but stay outside as long into the night as you want. You can do what you like here because nothing overlooks you.

Step from the garden or the house through tall glass doors into the irresistible swimming pool room. Immerse yourself with warm water, cool design and total decadence.

Beyond the pool is the spa with steam room, sauna and therapy room. Book a wonderful treatment or just relax and enjoy. For the more active there is an exercise studio and games room to enjoy.

What a holiday this is going to be.

Locally…
If you can tear yourself away from the luxury of West Axnoller Farm, there is so much to entertain you. Dorset is the only county in England that has no motorways and West Dorset is its most perfect gem.

As well as the glorious Dorset downland pasture in and around the 100-acre West Axnoller Farm, you are on the edge of the Jurassic Coast – official title “the UNESCO Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site” – which offers the chance to explore 185 million years of earth history along 95 miles of spectacular cliffs and beaches, including the extraordinary Chesil Beach.

For more recent history, visit the local iron age hillforts and the Cerne Giant of Cerne Abbas. West Axnoller Farm itself is on the site of a former medieval village of 14 houses, built around the headwaters of the River Axe. You are deep in Thomas Hardy Country here, centred on Dorchester, which he called Casterbridge. The inspiration for tragic Tess of the d’Urbervilles lived near our own town of Beaminster, which Hardy renamed Emminster. We eat well here in West Dorset. With TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall living a few miles away, you can hardly move for fresh local produce beautifully prepared. Among restaurants and gastro-pubs in the area (and in no particular order) you should visit the Sawmill Café at Mapperton House, Le Petit Canard Restaurant in Maiden Newton, Little Barwick House hotel just outside Yeovil, Kempsters Restaurant in Mid Chinnock, the Anchor Inn (for shellfish) and the Riverside Restaurant at West Bay. The closest pub is a lovely walk along the footpath across the pastures to the Winyards Gap Inn at Cheddington or you can choose one of the four pubs in Beaminster.

Look out at the view across pastures of West Axnoller Farm and you will see at once that the Brake family are keen on horses. They produce top quality show jumpers and eventers. Why else would they name these holiday homes Voltaire and Burgraaf – two of most famous Dutch Jumping Stallions. For the more sedate, there is a golf course locally and Lyme Regis, Charmouth and West Bay offer boating and sea fishing and lovely beaches. Other attractions locally include the Tank Museum at Bovington, Monkey World in Wareham, the Swannery at Abbotsbury, and children’s entertainment at Cricket St Thomas and Crealy.
