Hartington Cottages - Buxton, Derbyshire, England

Knowl Cottage, with its 3 en-suite bedrooms is graded the maximum 5 Star.  Original beams, probably therefore erected in the 1300s can be seen, and there is an lnglenook fireplace and stone mullion windows. Just sit in the living room with its walls ovnearly 3 feet thick and contemplate the history of the cottage!

The other two cottages are both one bedroomed, (one sleeping two with an en-suite, one sleeping three) with modern tasteful ambience, whilst still retained charchter features, in particular some imposing beams. These two cottages have full sized bathrooms with showers over, and in the living room log effect stoves that again lend to creating a lovely atmosphere in which to relax in the evening after exploration of the locality.

All three cottages have fully controllable central heating, gorgeous real granite sinks, gloss worktops, leather suites, top of the range laminated floors of the highest quality (where not carpeted).

In the courtyard there is a barbecue and laundry room and provision for off-road parking of cars. Some limited outdoor seating area with flower borders. All three cottages have ten (!) information folders, written partly from a personalised view-point providing loads of advice on the numerous attractions, activities sights etc within a close distance, and are much praised by Guests and our various Tourist Board Inspectors alike. Events lists are supplied between May and september. Most importantly housekeeping is our highest priority and indeed 100% was the score in all three cottages in this respect awarded by the Tourist Board Inspector.

Hartington is one of the most highly regarded villages in the Peak with geese pond, hall, fine old stone buildings, a couple of excellent coaching inns, tea rom, gift shops, renowned cheese shop and a couple of grocers/newsagent. Its prime popularity is that it is the start of many excellent and varied walks.

The approach down a long dale to the village from the main road really takes some beating. The River Dove is only a few hundred yards away and a very popular walk starts in the village, over some lovely meadows to the River, along the stretch known as Berefsford Dale, which in turn leads onto Wolfscote Dale and the most famous Dale of the Peak, Dovedale. Its central location within the White Peak (This is that part of the Peak District with dales, rolling hills, limestone villages such as Youlgreave and Ashford-in-the-Water, and dry stone walls which give the area so much charachter - The dark Peak is mainly moorland),is confirmed by its distance of 11 miles from the towns of Ashbourne, Leek, Buxton, Bakewell and Matlock, all towns on the edge of the White Peak.

There is almost certainly more to do within say 40 minutes drive of the cottages that anywhere else in the UK.

There are numerous footpaths and bridle ways in the immediate vicinity, offering unrivalled walking in the best part of the White Peak.

The highly popular Tissington Trail, which runs for 17 miles, is used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders, and is just 1 mile from the cottages. Two further trails, the High Peak Trail and the Manifold Valley Trail (both of similar distance), are within 2 miles. These three tracks are ideal for family cycling as is the network of quiet minor roads, which can be accessed at numerous points along the trails. These former railway lines have much else to offer, not least quality views, but also interesting viaducts, steam beam engines and other remnants of the past.

Lovely towns and villages to explore including our own village, Hartington with its famous creamery and cheese shop and duck pond, Youlgreave which has Englands smallest house at Thimble Hall, The lovely Ashford-in-the-Water with a gorgeously photographic 'sheepwash' bridge spanning the River Wye and the beautiful classic Haddon Hall near Bakewell, which probably surpasses even Chatsworth for its beauty.

For Antique lovers, the market town of Ashbourne has numerous shops to keep an enthusiast lingering for hours.

Travel: 11 miles from Buxton, Matlock, Bakewell, Ashbourne and Leek

Good places to visit: Hartington is located in that part of the Peak District known as the White Peak. This is the area of rolling countryside, dales, streams and rivers, limestone villages and dry-stone walls, which give the area so much character. Hartington’s central position within the White Peak is confirmed by its equal distance, namely 11 miles, from Buxton, Matlock, Bakewell, Ashbourne and Leek, all towns on the perimeter of the White Peak at different points on the compass. These towns, and many smaller villages all have something to offer for day trips. Also Alton Towers (of course) Chatsworth and Haddon Hall (of course again), National Tramway Meseum and Ntional Stone Centre, the cable cars at Height of Abraham (Matlock Bath), the market towns of Buxton, Bakewell, Ashbourne; the estate village of Tissington; Carsington water, where all types of water sport are enjoyed.

Annual Events: Hundreds of events throughout the year, but in particular Well Dressing in all the surrounding villages continuously between May and September. Events list are suppoied in advance of guests arrivals showing the events occuring specific to a guest's stay.

Good places to eat: One of our ten information folders is dedicated to eating and drinking, with extensive information not least due to the fact that there are 28 eating pubs within 7 miles and several restaurants within a similar distance, not to mention the tea-shops and fish and chip shops!

Local Sports: Unbelievably good walking in immediate vicinity; cycling (three cycle trails near-by and Sustrans National Cycle Route 54 passes through the village) horse riding.
