Much of the early wealth of Tenterden came from the wool industry of the 13th and 14th centuries. Churches were often beneficiaries when wool merchants wanted to ingratiate themselves with the Almighty, the Church of St Mildred dating back to 1180 AD also received donations to make it the handsome building that it is. Fine period houses can be seen in the town centre. The wide tree lined high street offers a good assortment of shops and eateries.
