Seaford - East Sussex, holiday lets on the south coast
Seaford is a seaside town on the south coast in East Sussex, about halfway between Brighton and Eastbourne.
Unlike its busy commercial neighbours, Seaford is unspoiled and very different in character. Firstly, there is no street lighting along the sea front so that you can actually see the stars clearly at night and watch the moon rise from behind the white chalky cliffs. |

The beach is a high ridge of shingle. There are warnings about waves produced by passing ships from the ferry port at Newhaven. To the west of the beach are caravan parks and a boat yard. Colourful sails dot about the water. Walking eastwards along the seafront, a concrete esplanade provides seating and shelter. There are benches at frequent intervals all along the sea front - most of which have been donated as gifts or in memory of friends and relatives who loved Seaford. |

Car parking along the Seaford seafront was free when we visited in March 2005 - an almost unheard of situation on England's south coast. A few holiday lets and private holiday homes line the road running along the seafront. There is an excellent free park with a childrens' adventure playground, skateboarding, playing fields and several tennis courts. For refreshments there is a large pub with outdoor seating, a few ice cream vans, and a kiosk, but the usual seaside resort shops and entertainment found in Brighton and Eastbourne are pleasantly lacking. |

Further east along the beach there is a surviving Martello Tower, now housing a small museum that visitors can peruse for a small fee. The white chalky cliffs rise up in the background, prior to which is there is a small beach of sand and shingle. Steps and a footpath lead upwards to the top of the cliffs and towards the nature reserve. The view of the beach and town of Seaford from above is impressive and well worth the climb. A steady trickle of walkers follows the well worn paths across the top of the cliffs. |
