| Cullen in Banffshire
Just
a few miles west of Portsoy, Cullen is a popular coastal town that attracts many visitors.
The bridge and arched viaduct across the main road frame two beautiful views of the
harbour and beach.
Nowadays
it is possible to walk for a short way on the disused train line over the viaduct and
obtain a panoramic view of the town, and the original fishermen's cottages close to the
beach.
The beach
is sandy with rocky outcrops and pools and a few interesting rock formations. A
popular amusement for children is to dive off the harbour wall and into the sea, which we
also observed in Portsoy. There is also another small secluded beach round by the
harbour.

A shop
that you must visit whilst in Cullen is the ice cream shop. It sells old-fasioned
and fondly remembered sweets from large glass jars, such humbugs, pear drops, and
licquorice toffee. There was a constant queue of people for the gigantic whipped ice
cream cones that cost a mere pound and tasted like ice cream used to. There is also a
popular tea shop, a local hotel for traditional high teas, a shop specialising in dolphin
objects, some with antiques, and a fishing shop with live maggots. Something for
everyone!
