Isle of Wight for
country cottages and self-catering holiday accommodation:
About
the Isle of Wight
Just
off the coast of England, almost opposite Southampton, the Isle of Wight is a
popular destination for summer holidays. The island lies just 3
miles south of the UK mainland, so you can easily get there by ferry from
Southampton, Lymington or Portsmouth.
The
Isle of Wight offers both a traditional seaside holiday on the coast and
unspoiled countryside inland. You have a choice of exploring by car, on foot, or
if you enjoy cycling, on your bike. There is a 62 mile round island cycle route
for the serious cyclist and off-road trails for mountain bikers, plus safe
cycling for families along former railway lines.
If
you prefer to spend most of your time close to the beach, then you will find
plenty of beach
activities, amusement parks, the freshest fish and chips, tea shops galore, gift
shops to browse in for souvenirs and trinkets. If you enjoy
historical and
cultural visits and day trips, then you may consider a visit to Carisbrook Castle or Roman ruins, walks
along a pier, a visit to one of the potteries, Arreton Craft Village, a
trip on the steam railway, or shopping in one of the main towns of Brading, Cowes,
Freshwater, Newport, Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, or Yarmouth.
Cowes
Week, at the beginning of August is one of the highlights of the year on the
Isle of Wight. Plenty
of sailing and watersports are available.
