Self catering country cottages in Rutland, England

Rutland is best known for Rutland Water, a nature reserve which covers a total of 600 acres. Rutland Water is one of the main wildfowl sanctuaries in the UK and this large lake and reserve is therefore excellent for avid bird watchers.  There is a dedicated bird watching visitor centre and Ospreys can often be spotted.  In addition to this, with its fishing and sailing areas, Rutland Water attracts people who love to fly fish and those in search of boat trips or sailing.  There is a fishing lodge on site and a sailing club.  If walking or cycling is more your thing, there are 25 miles of tracks with lovely views around Rutland Water.  There is also an Arboretum. 

If you want to do a bit of shopping or eat out on your self catering break, there are a number of attractive market towns in Rutland, including Stamford, Oakham and Uppingham.  Stamford is a handsome market town with attractive historic stone buildings built from money made in the wool trade.  If you are interested in visiting English country houses, don’t miss Burghley house in Stamford.  There are a large number of pubs and restaurants in Stamford and nice walks by the river.  Oakham is the main town of Rutland and good for shopping.  Uppingham is another attractive market town with a good number of antique shops, great for bargain hunters. 

Although small in size, Rutland has lots to offer for country cottage holidays.  It is also conveniently located for visiting the pretty town of Melton Mowbray which is just over the border in Leicestershire and an easy 30 minute drive from Stamford.
