Ship Cottage - BRIDPORT,

West Bay, in the middle of the spectacular UNESCO Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site known colloquially as the Jurassic Coast, is the harbour that has served the market town of Bridport for centuries. Once a busy ship building centre and fishing base it is now a very popular tourist destination, particularly following the television series Harbour Lights. It is also an ideal base to explore the many attractions of one of the few World Heritage Sites that are easily accessible to the public. Most of the West Dorset coastline is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there are wonderful walks in many directions that start at West Bay. There are also many sporting facilities all within easy reach of Ship Cottage. For more information on the Jurassic Coast please visit www.jurassiccoast.com.

Recent flood prevention works to the harbour have resulted in a greatly expanded sheltered area with excellent launching facilities for small and medium sized pleasure and fishing boats. West Bay has some good local pubs and it is also the riverside setting for the nationally known and highly regarded Riverside Restaurant that specialises in local seafood. It is advisable to book early for this popular venue at all times of the year. Two miles away, Bridport is a thriving town with excellent local shops and restaurants offering Chinese, Indian, Thai and English cuisine. It has a very popular and large street market twice a week - Wednesday and Saturday - of fruit and vegetables, antiques and bric-a-brac. The largest is on Saturday. There are also three supermarkets.

Bridport has a long history as a market town. Up to the age of steam it became a centre for rope making for sailing ships with many flax mills processing the locally grown flax for use as raw material.
