Free places of interest
in London:
The museums and many art
galleries are free. Enjoy London's parks in the summer, Green Park, St. James'
park, Regents Park, Hampstead Heath, all for free.
Free sightseeing walks:
Walk part of the Thames
Path (signposted, along the Thames), perhaps from Canary Wharf to Tower Bridge
and take in the impressive skyscrapers of Canary Wharf, Docklands, St. Katherine's
Dock and Dickens Inn, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. Entry to the Tower
of London and the Tower Bridge Experience is by ticket only. A visit to the
Tower of London is well worth the money.
Or, walk from the Tower
of London to the Millenium Bridge, passing the Fire of London memorial en-route.
Pop into St. Pauls cathedral, then use the Millenium Bridge to cross the river
and visit Tate Modern art gallery. Note the Shakespearean Globe Theatre (take
the tour if you wish) to the left. Continue along the Southbank and enjoy the
various free street entertainers. The Southbank is very pretty at night with
blue lights interwoven in the trees. There is an excellent view to be had for
free from the top of the OXO tower - just take the lift. The view is equally
good to that of the London Eye and you don't have to queue. You may wish to
visit the London Aquarium. Cross Westminster Bridge for the Houses of Parliament,
Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey and Cathedral.
There are numerous other
good places to explore in London, walking if free and often the best method
of seeing London. The open-topped sightseeing buses have their uses but do allow
plenty of time because you will spend much of your journey stuck in traffic.
