The idyllic Cotswold hills area covers a large part of the East of Gloucestershire whereas the beautiful Forest of Dean can be found in the West of the county. Adorable Cotswold towns rich with history include Chipping Camden, Stow on the Wold, Moreton-in-Marsh, Tewkesbury and Cirencester. The Cotswold towns and villages tend to be characterised by beautiful honey coloured stone buildings, many of which are quite magnificent and were built from wealth created from the wool trade way back in the 15th and 16th centuries. To really get the best of the Cotswolds though and get a real taste of old England it’s best to visit some of the less well known charming Cotswold villages such as Upper and Lower Slaughter, Painswick and Broadway.

The Cotswolds are perfect for relaxing, soaking up the scenery and for making frequent stop offs at the cafes and tea shops. There are also a number of beautiful arboretums, gardens and large country houses that you can visit. The famous village of Bourton on the Water is outstandingly pretty and well worth a visit, although this village is very popular and can get very busy, so get there early.

For shopping whilst on a self catering holiday, there are lots of shops, both high street and designer in Cheltenham and, being an original spa town, Cheltenham is a pretty and pleasant place to shop. Cheltenham is also of course well known because of its racecourse. The city of Gloucester is also an attractive city with lots of shopping opportunities and plenty of restaurants.

For those with children to keep entertained on a country cottage break, Gloucestershire has lots to offer with a Cotswolds Farm park at Guiting Power, a wildlife park at Burford, a bird and deer park at Cranham, a waterpark near Cirencester, a Birdland at Bourton on the Water and a steam railway at Toddington.

Although not in Gloucestershire, the beautiful city of Bath lies just south of the county making it easily possible to visit Bath from the south of Gloucestershire.
