Hints and Tips on Cottage Holidays in Filey

Fresh Air and Fun for self-catering holidaymakers in Filey!

Filey has been a magnet for tourism since Victorian times. This seaside resort on Yorkshire’s coast makes such a good impression that many people decide to retire here. The long, sweeping beach is certainly a big part of the attraction. It’s also a safe family holiday destination with a lifeguard on duty during high season. The town’s railway station gives good connections to the other seaside resorts of Bridlington and Scarborough and also to the historic town of York.

Filey is less ‘commercialised’ than some of the other large coastal resorts in Yorkshire. One of the most enjoyable activities here is to take the air on the promenade, which stretches throughout the town. There is still plenty to do on the seafront for active families, including a playground for the children, a paddling pool, a small boating lake, mini go-karts and mini golf. For something a little different,
Filey Seafront Sculpture Trail offers artwork themed on Filey’s heritage, with input from the town’s residents.

Filey has lots to offer families for cottage holidays.  With almost six miles of sands, Filey is perfect for the young and the young at heart to put their buckets and spades to good use. Beach chalets are for hire and the kids will enjoy a donkey ride on the beach. North of the bay, families can explore the rocks known as Filey Brigg at low tide and observe the inhabitants of the rock pools there. The Brigg is a haunt of bird watchers and marine wildlife lovers.

Filey Dams Nature Reserve is an important freshwater marsh for wildfowl and also wild flowers, insects, mammals and amphibians. Visitors are welcome but must respect the conservation needs of the reserve and follow the walkway and use the viewing hides.

Keen fishing enthusiasts will enjoy the annual Fishing Festival during the first week of September, when 70 trophies are in contention. For golfers, there is Filey Golf Club. Visitors are welcome to book a tee and to participate in certain competitions. After a game, the restaurant provides a diverse menu.

Anyone interested in the local history and culture of the area, including its role in the fishing industry, will enjoy a browse round the award winning Filey Museum. Situated in the old town, the museum is appropriately sited in 17th century buildings. These are Grade II listed and contain eight rooms of displays, most augmented by an audio commentary. Filey’s transition from a farming and fishing town to a place of tourist attractions is a fascinating one.

For a fun look at traditions from the past, the annual Filey Edwardian Festival celebrates that period with a whole week of Punch and Judy, music from brass bands and barrel organs and ladies suitably attired in Edwardian dresses.

Filey offers a traditional seaside holiday but lots of other options too. Access to the beach, the countryside and local wildlife plus a range of outdoor activities provides different experiences for all ages and interests. After a few enjoyable self-catering seaside breaks in Filey, you may even look forward to retirement in a cottage here too!
