Cottage rentals in Cropton, Yorkshire, England

Dreaming of a Yorkshire cottage break?  Cropton is a village in Ryedale in North Yorkshire and many people come to this area to holiday and to fill their lungs with the fresh air of the North Yorkshire Moors.  Considered to be a gateway to the Yorkshire Moors, it is the perfect location for a  family self-catering break or a stag weekend. Read on and discover why.

Facts about Self-Catering Holidays in Cropton

Cropton Forest nearby, offers coniferous trees in the main and contains outdoor activity centres. The various challenges available make it ideal for a stag weekend or a self-catering break with the lads.

The village is known to connoisseurs of ale as the home of the microbrewery, Cropton Brewery.  Guided tours of the brewery are popular (must be 12 years of age and older) and participants can sample the various products brewed there. Beers include the intriguingly named Monkman’s Slaughter Strong Bitter, Rudolph’s Revenge Winter Ale and Haunting Hanks Scary Bitter.

The nearby market town of Pickering is just four miles from Cropton and well worth a visit when on a cottage holiday.  It has plenty of family attractions. Beck Isle Museum tells the story of the local area through indoor and outdoor themed displays. Kids love the various demonstrations and the activity trails designed for different ages, with a prize for the participants.

Children and steam train enthusiasts will appreciate the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, which runs trains from Pickering to Grosmont through 18 miles of the Moors countryside. Less frequently, a service carries on to the coastal town of Whitby. If going by car to Whitby (or to Scarborough), it only takes an hour or so. Also of interest is Pickering Castle, a well-preserved castle associated with both William the Conqueror and King Henry III.

The village of Hutton-le-Hole is very close by to Cropton and its main attraction is the Ryedale Folk Museum. Displays here bring the past to life, as lived by the ordinary folk of the area. This open-air museum replicates buildings, shops and agricultural machinery from times gone by and the art gallery showcases arts and crafts. An interesting calendar of events appeals to all the family.

For guaranteeing the kids a fun packed time on your self-catering holiday and for thrills and spills, head to Flamingo Land, near Kirbymisperton.  This theme park offers rides for every age group. It also contains a zoo, so it really does provide a full day out. As well as the usual zoo animals, children like to get close to the domestic and farm animals, including Shetland ponies, ducks, cows, rabbits and guinea pigs.

For thrills of a different kind, York is just an hour away by car and the kids are sure to love the Jorvik Viking Centre. As a result of archaeological excavations, the public are able to experience a very accurate re-enactment of how the Vikings lived in what became Coppergate. See how they worked, socialised and fed themselves. Even the smells of these settlements are replicated!

A more sedate, but nonetheless interesting, attraction to discover whilst on a cottage break is Castle Howard, a stately home and estate near York. It’s an imposing building containing beautiful furnishings and artwork, surrounded by gardens and woodland trails. If it looks familiar, it may be because it was used as a location for the TV adaptation and the film version of ‘Brideshead Revisited’.

Cropton is surrounded by the best countryside, villages, towns and attractions that North Yorkshire has to offer. The only problem is fitting it all in, but you’ll never be bored.
