Hints and Tips on Cottage Holidays in Cottingham
Cottingham, in Yorkshire’s East Riding, is a very pretty village and a comfortable spot for a self-catering break from which to explore the coast or the Wolds. It’s also near the facilities of Kingston-upon-Hull and the market town of Beverley. Founded in the 6th century AD, its residents claim the title of ‘largest village in England’, although other villages also lay claim to it!
The village has a lively mix of cafes, pubs and restaurants with different cuisine and shops. Cottingham has had a market since the 1600s and today’s market day is on Thursdays on Market Green.
For anyone wanting to combine a bit of exercise with learning about the history of the local area during their cottage holiday, a short circular walk around the village centre is outlined in a leaflet published by the village’s local history society. It’s available in many of the village shops. If you are interested in discovering historical buildings then we recommend paying a visit to the church of St. Mary the Virgin on Hallgate. It’s an interesting example of a church developing over time, from the 1300s until Victorian times and it has many attractive features. Careful restoration has secured its status as a Grade I listed building.
Golfers will appreciate Cottingham Parks Golf & Leisure Club. Two 18-hole courses are set within beautiful parkland and amenities include a fitness centre, spa, pool, equestrian centre and restaurant.
For a nearby attraction the whole family should enjoy on a self-catering break, Skidby Windmill is the last working windmill in the county. Constructed in 1821, wholemeal flour is still made in the traditional way from wheat grown locally, using millstones for grounding. When visitors have finished watching the process in the windmill, they can move into some old warehouses and learn all about the history of the area at the Museum of East Riding Life. This includes a picnic area, wildlife space, a café and a blacksmith’s forge. Bags of flour from the windmill are on sale and they make a fun but useful souvenir of the day.
Cottingham is known for its entertaining events and none more so than the annual Cottingham Day. It serves as both a fun family day out and a charity fundraiser. On the first Saturday in July every year, more than 20,000 people can be expected. The 2012 event included an Elvis impersonator, someone impersonating the Queen, a pipe band, a huge crazy golf course and vintage cars. Cottingham Horse Show, a traditional equestrian and agricultural show, takes place every summer. Every September sees the Cottingham Caravan Show, which is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Switching on the Christmas lights also attracts visitors from far and wide. Depending on the time of year you visit, you may be lucky enough to enjoy one of these events during your cottage holiday.
Whether you are a walker, a golfer or a history devotee or you want to time your break for a village event, your stay in Cottingham will be a relaxed one. Select one of the good quality cottages in Yorkshire shown below and plan that visit. Good local produce (not to mention ale) will supplement the local attractions and activities for a traditional Yorkshire welcome.
