What Clayton offers for Self-Catering Breaks
The South Downs area of West Sussex offers great scenery and attractions and the village of Clayton makes a good base. An Area of Outstanding Beauty, the South Downs National Park has terrific opportunities for walking and cycling. Above the village, The Clayton Windmills (nicknamed ‘Jack’ and ‘Jill’) are Grade II listed buildings. Jill, built in 1821, is a working corn mill and is open to visitors. Clayton is known for another historic structure, namely the Clayton Tunnel. Built in the 1840s for the London-Brighton railway line, the entrance has an unusual castellated design. Also in the village is St. John the Baptist Church which is also worth a visit. This church boasts beautiful, medieval wall murals. Its graveyard contains the grave of fashion designer, Norman Hartnell, famous for designing clothes for Queen Elizabeth II. For those who enjoy a game of golf, there is a choice of three golf courses nearby including the cheerfully named Singing Hills Golf Course.
For days out whilst on your holiday in the countryside, why not visit the picturesque town of Lewes with its fine historical buildings just 11 miles away. If you want the bright lights of a major town to mix things up a little, Brighton is only 7 miles away.
