Nestled within the greenery of Exmoor National Park is Wheddon Cross, located on one of the highest points of the park at 980 feet above sea level. Not only does this location make for a delightful base for a self-catering holiday, ideal for keen walkers and cyclists but this village also benefits from being just 9 miles from the popular seaside resort of Minehead.  Self-catering accommodation in and near Wheddon Cross includes country cottages, farm cottages and rural retreats.

About Self-Catering Holidays in Wheddon Cross

The village also benefits from having a post office and store, a garage, a pub, a hotel and a church all within walking distance. The village is near to snowdrop valley. The whole landscape of the valley is transformed in February/March by a blanket of snowdrops that cover the banks of the river Avil, heralding the imminent start of spring.  Once the secret of locals, the valley is now a popular tourist attraction and recommended for a visit, even out of snowdrop season. In season a bus service operates from Wheddon Cross.

There is a footpath from the village that eventually leads to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor at 1707 feet above sea level. The panoramic views from the beacon, that was worthy of mention in John Fry’s ‘Lorna Doone’, are spectacular. Ponies and deer roam free here and the skies and woodland are the habitat of some rare bird species. The land was donated to the National Trust in 1935.

The Wheddon Cross and Cutcombe livestock market holds regular auctions of cattle and sheep from across Exmoor that attracts buyers from all over the country. To get a genuine taste of country life on your cottage break it’s well worth checking out the dates that auctions are held.

This area is a walkers’ paradise as is much of Exmoor, all 267 square miles of it. The moor is criss-crossed by well signposted paths and provides a diverse range of fascinating landscapes, wildlife and activities, including fishing, canoeing, cycling and horse riding. An excellent way of seeing the best, or the best secrets, of Exmoor whilst on a self-catering break is with one of the companies that operate 4-wheel drive safaris throughout Exmoor. At Wheddon Cross you are at the heart of it, but you’re also just a short journey away from a great deal more. The traditional seaside resort of Minehead is only nine miles away and Dunster and its castle is even closer. Cross the border and visit Devon’s north coast at Lynton or Lynmouth. Or travel south to Tiverton and discover some wonderful countryside and picturesque villages on the way. Whatever type of holiday you enjoy you’ll enjoy it all the more when you book a cottage stay at Wheddon Cross.  Whether you opt for a cottage in the country, a farm stay or a romantic retreat, we trust that you’ll be inspired by all that this area of Somerset has to offer.

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Wheddon Cross, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in Somerset.
