If you want to be close to some of the best resorts on the Somerset coast and other popular attractions on a cottage holiday, but be able to escape the hustle and bustle, Lower Washford is your perfect base. This small village is located close to the main Minehead to Bridgewater road and for lovers of nature, walking, cycling and horse riding, conveniently on the edge of Exmoor National Park.  Surrounded by some stunning countryside, Lower Washford could be an excellent choice for a country cottage holiday.

About Cottage Breaks in Washford

The village has 2 pubs, the White Horse Inn and the Dragon House Hotel, both with excellent dining facilities and homely bars. There is a village post office and the Washford river flows through the village on its journey from the Brendon hills to the Bristol Channel.

The river also passes by Cleve Abbey a historical site near to Washford that history buffs will want to visit on a self-catering break. Despite the best efforts of King Henry VIII the magnificent Cistercian Abbey has all but survived and you can imagine the monks going about their tasks as you walk through the grand building. The fabulous monks’ dormitory is a great tribute to the abbey’s construction that has foiled both the reformation and the test of time, to be considered as one of the finest remaining in Britain.

For something completely different, and just a short distance from Cleeve Abbey at Washford Cross you can give the whole family a treat and visit Tropiquaira. This small tropical house and zoo includes animals, an aquarium and an indoor tropical landscape with exotic reptiles, birds and fish. The building housed a BBC radio transmitter in the 1930s and today there is a radio museum on the site, plus a puppet theatre and lots of games and activities for kids.

Another great, local family favourite is the West Somerset Railway. Vintage steam and classic diesel trains travel between Minehead and Bishops Lydeard and stop at Washford station. This is a superb way to enjoy a slice of nostalgia on a cottage holiday plus some great scenery as the train travels south through the Quantock Hills, climbing up to some 400 feet at Crowcombe. Going north the trains also stop at Blue Anchor, Watchet, and Minehead so you can enjoy the freedom of going to the seaside by train and leaving the car behind.

However, if you do choose to take the car you’ll reach these resorts, plus Dunster and its famous castle, the wide expanse at the heart of Exmoor, and countless other Somerset attractions in no time at all. Such is the ideal location and the road access from Lower Washford.  Whether you wish to visit Somerset for a family self-catering holiday or a romantic retreat, enjoy browsing through the available choices on Country Cottages Online.

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Washford, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in Somerset.
