A self-catering holiday in Wembury is an excellent choice, one that will suit your whole party. You can spend lazy days on the beach, exploring some of the best populated rock pools in the country, or rub down the surfboard and take advantage of a 10ft swell. If you enjoy walking then you’re spoilt for choice, but if you prefer cycling you can hire a bike nearby. And if photography is your hobby then you’re in for a real treat with some amazing seascapes, landscapes and scenery. Plymouth is just a few miles away so retail therapy and nightlife is not too far away either.

What Wembury offers for Self-Catering Breaks

There are two interesting landmarks off Wembury beach to discover on a cottage holiday. The first is the tiny island of Great Mewstone. Once a penal colony from the 18th century it was last occupied by one Samuel Wakeman and his family in the early 19th century. Look closely at the rock and you’ll see a strange round cottage that Samuel was responsible for. Sadly he was discovered smuggling and was returned to the mainland. In 1940 Wembury Point became a naval gunnery school and it was not advisable, nor permitted, to visit Great Mewstone that has since become National Trust property and is a bird sanctuary, now visited only by authorised researchers. The other landmark, just above the beach is the quaint church of St. Werburgh that was built in Norman times, replacing a wooden Saxon church. Also on the beach is the Old Mill Café and beach shop selling refreshments and locally crafted souvenirs.

Wembury has a marine centre that, besides having interactive displays and aquaria exhibitions, organises rock pool rambles and wildlife walks.  Since the naval gunnery school was decommissioned the land at Wembury Point has been opened up for visitors. From there you get magnificent views of the whole bay area. The point is home to rare plants and birds and, if you’re lucky, you may catch glimpses of basking sharks, dolphins and porpoises in the sea whilst on a self-catering break.

Other breathtaking views are on offer from Wembury Cliffs where you might bump into a Dartmoor pony or two and if you follow on to Wembury Woods you’ll follow the river Yealm.  However, instead of all this walking you could just sit back and enjoy all these sights from Plymouth Cruises’ new ship the ‘Spirit of Plymouth’ on a scenic cruise from Plymouth taking in the coastline, Great Mewstone, the estuary and the river.

With plenty of fantastic seascapes plus Dartmoor National Park being within easy reach for day trips, this is a fantastic part of Devon with lots to offer for family holidays or romantic getaways.  Whether you opt for a coastal cottage or a rural cottage further inland, have the very best of times in this part of the West Country.

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Wembury, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in Devon.
