What Wormhill, Derbyshire offers for Self-Catering Holidays

Each of the holiday homes near Wormshill and Miller's Dale are comfortable and clean; fully equipped for a self-catered break. There are small cottages that might suit couples, three bedroomed family cottages and even larger ones up to mansions. Each of the cottages and houses are reliably good and offer a place to stay that is a good base for a holiday in the heart of the Peak District.

Why Wormhill near Miller's Dale is a good place to book a self-catering break

It is always satisfying to find good quality accommodation in the Peak District which also has numerous places to visit nearby. Wormhill is a lovely and peaceful, small Derbyshire village complete with a traditional village green with old stocks and a drinking fountain. A memorial to locally born James Brindley, famous builder of canals in the 1700s, is here. Thought to have the original name of Wolfhill, hunting wolves was a common pastime here in the 14th century. If you’re thinking of visiting, never fear, as they’ve long disappeared! Holidaymakers who like to go walking in pretty countryside are spoilt for choice when staying in Wormhill, as several footpaths lead to beauty spots in the surrounding Derbyshire Dales, including Chee Dale and Monks Dale. Nature lovers enjoy exploring the nearby nature reserves with their distinctive flora and fauna in this limestone landscape.

A well on the village green is decorated during the annual Wormhill Well Dressing, as is a well in the churchyard of St. Margaret’s Church. Well Dressings are an old Derbyshire custom, when wells are adorned with natural materials such as flower petals, depicting images from local history or religion. The Wormhill wells are decorated in late August or early September. The Grade II listed church of St. Margaret’s is open to visitors during the well dressing week. Do book cottages in advance to be on the spot to see this.

For more amenities and shopping, head for the spa town of Buxton, which is around five miles from Wormhill. This attractive town is renowned for its fine Georgian buildings. You can try the mineral water, reported to be a pleasanter tasting experience than other spa waters!  Town attractions include The Pavilion Gardens. In addition to the wonderful gardens, there is a soft play area for the kids, a miniature train, an outdoor fitness park, lakes and a café. These gardens have undergone a lengthy restoration and now reflect their original Victorian design. The botanical conservatory is where you’ll find specimens of plants and palms plus a fish pond.

Culture is also available at the garden complex. The Pavilion Arts Centre, opened in 2010, presents entertainment in the Studio Theatre and the larger Main Room. You can get a drink at the bar at the Main Room, which delivers a programme of stand-up comedians and live music. It is also a venue for the festivals that Buxton is well known for.  Studio Theatre productions include fringe theatre in addition to family and children friendly shows. Buxton Opera House is another cultural venue here. Celebrated for its Edwardian design, this theatre presents something for everyone.

Wormhill has lovely countryside, town attractions and fun and culture on its doorstep. Rent that Derbyshire country cottage or apartment and enjoy!

Whether you choose to book a holiday cottage in Wormhill, an apartment, a lodge or another type of self-catering holiday accommodation, we hope you have your best holiday yet in Derbyshire.
