Find your perfect rural retreat break

Wherever you are in terms of planning your summer break, holidaymakers can be reassured that last year, despite the start of pandemic being in March, cottage holidays from July to September were possible in many parts of the UK. Although we’re not out of the woods yet, holidaymakers can be reassured by news of the vaccine roll out and government predictions that the UK may be able to return to a more normal way of life hopefully by the summer. These are uncertain times we are living in, and some cottage owners and agencies are offering more flexible booking terms to reflect that. Check with owners and agencies about how flexible their terms are before booking.

If you’re someone planning to book a break in 2021, you may be looking for ideas and inspiration on some of the best places to stay. Staycation Ideas for 2021

Self-catering staycation holidays are very popular currently, some come with hot tubs and other luxuries

Following the coronavirus pandemic, staycations in the UK have seen a boom in popularity. Holiday cottages have been in very high demand in 2020 and all signs so far are that this pattern will continue in to 2021. With competition for the best properties high, booking early can make a lot of sense to avoid disappointment. What’s more, we all need something to look forward to, so thinking about staycation holiday ideas for 2021 sooner rather than later could be a great idea.

Although England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have seen lockdowns with short notice, and certain areas have had lockdown restrictions, many people have still managed to get away and enjoy a staycation holiday in 2020 and have plans to escape for a much needed break in 2021 too. With the situation with the coronavirus outbreak unpredictable, asking holiday home owners and agencies about booking conditions and cancellation policies prior to booking is strongly recommended, as is taking out appropriate holiday cancellation insurance.

Stay Safe on a Cottage Holiday

Stay happy on holiday with our hints and tips

The coronavirus pandemic and the government drive to control the virus means that although lots of people still want to enjoy a holiday this summer, staying safe is at the forefront of many people’s minds. With virus worries and concerns over quarantine periods if people choose to holiday abroad, demand for cottage breaks in the UK and Ireland is very high this summer.

If you want to take a break this summer it’s advisable to book asap to avoid disappointment as many holiday homes are now booked up until September.

Once you do have a break booked up, we’ve put together some hints and tips to help you stay safe on your break away.

Hints and Tips on Staying Safe on a Cottage Break

Quiet and Rural Locations

With social distancing still very important, some holidaymakers may prefer more rural and remote holiday destinations this summer where it’s easier to social distance, rather than traditional holiday destinations which tend to attract lots of people.

Browse Rural Retreat Breaks

• Whether they sign up for Visit Britain’s the Good to Go standard or not, the large majority of holiday home owners and agencies will be striving to ensure that they are following the very best cleaning practices to ensure that guests are healthy and happy on holiday.

There are also things you can do yourself to ensure you are confident about staying healthy and happy whilst staying at a holiday rental.

• As always if you are making a booking for the coming months, it is important that you take out appropriate insurance and fully check the booking terms and conditions with the independent owner or agency.

• If you would like extra reassurance, do ask for details of the cleaning regime in place during the coronavirus outbreak from the cottage owner or agency.

Additional Steps you can personally take to reduce your risk

• You may want to do some cleaning of a holiday home yourself on arrival if you so choose; to give you even greater confidence and assurances that you can relax in a safe and healthy environment, but you must speak to the owner or agency and notify them in advance that you plan to do this so that you have their agreement and can ensure that you’re using appropriate cleaning materials that won’t cause any damage. If you take some sanitisation steps yourself, this may make you feel even more safe and assured.

• It is perfectly reasonable to bring your own bedding and towels with you to use during this coronavirus outbreak, and as shaking of any infected linen could disperse the virus, it may be safest just to use your own bedding over existing bedding.

• In particular, you might want to sanitise light switches, remotes, handles, doorknobs, taps and tables.

•  Surfaces can usually be cleaned with a damp cloth with soapy water. It may also be advisable for killing the virus to use a cleaning product with atleast 70% alcohol (but you must check suitability of products with the owner or agency prior to use).  These are all additional steps you can take to help make yourself feel happier and safer on holiday; the large majority of holiday homes will be going the extra mile in any event with their cleaning protocols and sanitisation procedures.

Above all, it’s advisable to follow all reasonable steps to ensure your own good health and hygiene on holiday, but it’s important to relax too and enjoy good times (we all need a chance to switch off).

2020 the year of the Staycation

Following the coronavirus pandemic hitting Britain and most of the world earlier this year, when it comes to those lucky enough to take a holiday in 2020, one of the safest options for breaks this year may end up being a holiday in the UK. With it currently being unclear when people will be able to fly and holiday abroad at all and without having to go in to quarantine on return, holidaying at home in the UK could be an appealing option for 2020 breaks.

Staycation in style in the UK

What is the Best Time of Year for a Staycation Holiday?

Traditionally the months of June, July and August have been the top times of the year for summer breaks in Britain. With lockdown only just beginning to ease in England and most English holiday cottages only accepting bookings from 4 July at the earliest, later summer breaks may be more popular this year.

And that’s just England where cottage breaks are anticipated to be possible from 4 July. Wales has a traffic light lockdown exit plan which doesn’t yet specify proposed dates so it’s not yet currently known when cottage holidays in Wales will be possible. It’s also unclear currently when people will be able to holiday in Scotland as no provisional dates have yet been released. Ireland’s exit plan suggests that holidays within the country for residents of Ireland may be permitted from 20 July.

With different rules in different parts of the UK and it yet unclear when people will be able to take breaks across all the different countries that make up the UK, hopefully the situation will become clearer over the next few weeks. Late cottage breaks are expected to be popular this year, due to the fast changing nature of the situation.

Finding the Best Staycation Holiday for you

For those who usually go abroad, discovering staycations could be a whole new experience. For many, there really is nowhere better than Britain when the sun shines and the weather is good. Holiday at home and there is no need to worry about learning the local lingo or being understood, or getting hold of your favourite foods and brands of tea, making for an easier less stressful break. For many locations you can just jump in the car and go!

Also, Britain really is blessed with such a rich history, so many charming market towns, pretty villages, great walks and unspoilt countryside (including numerous Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and National Parks) so really what is there not to love? And at home, you can enjoy those reassuring home comforts like English breakfasts, cream teas, your favourite branded beers, teas and more.

Popular Staycation Choices

For those not familiar with UK cottage holidays, there are a great choice of options nowadays, including holiday rentals with leisure facilities for relaxing breaks.

Cottages with Private Indoor Pools

Private Indoor Swimming Pool at Edingtonhill House

With the UK weather not guaranteed to be hot, hot, hot all summer through, cottages with indoor swimming pools remain a popular choice. With social distancing ever important renting a holiday home with its own private swimming pool could be an essential choice for a 2020 break, although such properties are available at a premium.

Outdoor swimming pool for refreshing holidays

Cottages with Outdoor Pools

When the sun is beating down and the weather is warm, few things are as lovely as a refreshing dip in an outdoor swimming pool. Many outdoor pools are open in the summer months only. For your comfort and enjoyment, some outdoor pools are heated nowadays too, so you can enjoy a swim even when the weather isn’t so hot.

Remote and Isolated Hideaways

With social distancing important and at the forefront of all of our minds, remote and isolated holiday cottages are expected to be increasingly popular choices for 2020. For enjoying a break yet keeping your distance from crowds and others, a remote or isolated holiday rental could be a great choice.

For those who love exploring nature, the coast and the countryside, the benefit of remote holiday destinations is that you’re less likely to see too many other people when you’re exploring lesser known areas. Isolated cottages may offer you the chance to escape away from others, but may be in busier areas than remote destinations.

Find a remote or isolated holiday cottage

Whether you love to staycation as part of your annual holiday plans or 2020 is a first for you, we hope you find a perfect staycation option for you.

The Natural Appeal of Remote and Isolated UK Cottage Breaks

Remote and isolated cottage holidays have always been popular with those who like to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, recharge their batteries and get away from it all for a while. With the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, these sorts of holiday cottages are currently even more sought after by Britons looking to escape for a while.

Escape, Relax and Unwind

Escape to the country

Holiday homes in remote locations represent the chance to get closer to the natural world, and appreciate the beauty of the simple things in life; like waking up to the chirp of birdsong, watching the sunset over the horizon and seeing wildlife like squirrels or rabbits as they merrily hop around. There’s a kind of mindfulness in a remote cottage break; where you can be at one with nature and really appreciate a series of small pleasures and feeling at one with the natural world.

Connect with the Natural World

In these troubled times, getting closer to nature and away from the town and city could be a great choice. Although some scientists believe coronavirus is mostly spread via respiratory droplets, current UK government advice to avoid catching the virus includes maintaining good hygiene and frequent hand washing.

Most holiday homes are upping their cleaning practices during this time; but take your own bleach wipes and take your own precautions too to be doubly safe (let the owner or agency know when booking that you plan to do additional sanitising particularly of any high use areas like door-handles, TV controls etc, as they may even be able to supply you with sanitising products to reassure you). Ask if they will be supplying soap at the property. By taking sensible precautions you can enjoy a remote holiday, where you can to some extent escape the current crisis.

Choose destinations where you really can hide away with your loved ones, take walks along deserted beaches or quiet countryside and escape from city and town life and ease your mind.

Best Remote Cottage Holiday Destinations in Wales

When it comes to remote breaks, Wales with its miles and miles of unspoilt countryside, mountains and valleys could be the ideal choice. Options in terms of remote holiday homes in Wales include farmhouses, barn conversions and rural retreats.

Some of the most remote places to escape to in Wales include the Isle of Anglesey, Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Gwynedd, Conwy and Denbighshire. Choose holiday homes in isolated or secluded settings where you can be on your own with your family or partner.

Ideal Places for Remote Cottage Breaks in Scotland

By virtue of its geographical location, Scotland is a more remote holiday destination than either Wales or England. Whether you’re looking to stay by the coast or hide away in the countryside, there are a great number of choices of remote holiday destinations in Scotland.

Places where you can truly get away from it all include the Scottish Highlands, the outer Hebrides, the Isle of Skye, Argyll and Bute, and Morayshire.

For true getaways choose isolated farm cottages, barn conversions, rural retreats and lodges. Always check before booking whether the property is in an isolated setting, far from other properties.

Best Remote Cottage Holiday Destinations in England

England’s more remote destinations include places like Herefordshire, Shropshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland.

Although counties like Herefordshire and Shropshire are landlocked, choose to stay in Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Yorkshire, Durham or Northumberland and you have the choice of staying either by the coast or in the countryside. At each of these places if you choose the right locations you can escape from the throng and find quieter tranquil places far from lots of other people.

Choices of places to stay include rural retreats, farm cottages, barn conversions and hideaways. Choose isolated properties in England set on their own where you can get away from others and discover a remote unspoilt landscape on days out.
