For a self-catering cottage holiday in Somerset, you could choose to spend it in the friendly large village of Nether Stowey which is just over 8 miles north west of Bridgwater. This village is set in incredible grounds as it is by the foothills of the Quantock Hills which was actually the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England. Nether Stowey is a wonderful village to visit for if you like to mix breath-taking natural beauty with impressive and historical structures, as there are plenty to see. The 11th century Stowey Castle used to be situated in the settlement but sadly there is not much left to see of this Norman motte-and-bailey castle as it was destroyed in the 15th century. Visitors can still see the blue lias rubble wall, however. There is also the Church of St Mary the Virgin, much of which dates from the 19th century but the tower is from the 15th century and today is an impressive Grade II listed building that is worth the visit if residing in Nether Stowey. The charming 17th century Coleridge Cottage is also located in the village which was home to poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge who founded the Romantic Movement of this art form along with William Wordsworth. Going on relaxing strolls and ambles retracing the footsteps of Coleridge is a lovely way to spend an afternoon with your loved one in Nether Stowey.

With three pubs, shops and a restaurant, Nether Stowey is perfect for if you are wishing to spend a quiet self-catering break in a charming part of Somerset. There are plenty of cottages available to rent near to the Quantock Hills for if you wish to explore this beautiful area in more detail, and these cottages are all comfortable and of a great quality.
