The Cumbrian village of Kentmere is situated at the top of Kentmere Valley, on the River Kent. Its location in the south-eastern area of the Lake District National Park makes it a relaxing destination for a self-catering holiday, particularly for those people into walking and mountain biking. Various routes present a choice of gentle strolls or those more challenging, and it’s a favourite area for bouldering too. Kentmere was the inspiration for the village in the children’s Postman Pat stories by John Cunliffe. This quiet spot is at the centre of traditional life in the valley, with its sheep shows and fell racing against a background of pastureland, rolling hills and woodland. If you want the amenities and attractions of a town, Kendal is only a few miles away. If you’re into fishing, Kentmere Tarn is a fishery comprising of two beautiful lakes. Non-anglers will appreciate it too, and opportunities may arise for observing various birds, foxes and deer. The walk up the steep hill to St. Cuthbert’s Church is most worthwhile, both for the views and the attractive interior. Its churchyard is remarkable because of a yew tree which is more than 500 years old. Also of architectural interest is the oldest building in the village, now a private farm, named Kentmere Hall. For a lovely country break, Kentmere could be the ideal choice. Choices when it comes to self-catering accommodation include rural country cottages, log cabins, farm-stays and large holiday cottages. Whatever your needs, we hope you find fantastic accommodation in or close to Kentmere.
