Information on Cottage Holidays in Skibbereen

The town of Skibbereen is vibrant and welcoming, with bright coloured houses lining the streets and rows of individual shops and friendly, local pubs at every turn. There is so much to do here on a cottage holiday that it is hard to know where to begin, but the town has a rich history, and the monument at Abbeystrewery should be visited if in the village. This is where approximately 10,000 victims of the Irish famine of 1846-47 are said to be buried, from the 1.5 million in total who perished, and it makes a fascinating visit for those interested in history.

The Russagh Mills Adventure Centre is close by and offers opportunities to enjoy various outdoor pursuits from kayaking to abseiling, archery to rock climbing, and even scuba diving, for those looking for a unique and thrilling time in Ireland.

The stunning Lough Hyne and its vast waters can be seen from Knockonagh Forest Walk, and the views here truly are spectacular. Photographers will leap at the opportunity to snap at this incredible landscape and as Europe’s largest sea-water lake, nature lovers will be curious to know of the unusual marine life which dwell beneath the surfaces. Visitors can go to the Skibbereen Heritage Centre where you get more information and see the Lough Hyne Interpretative Centre which explains all about Ireland’s first Marine Nature Reserve, and it is truly fascinating to hear all about the lake.

In terms of entertainment whilst on your self-catering break, live music can often be heard through the doors of the cosy public houses, and settling down with a drink, a good meal, great company and traditional music is a wonderful way to spend a warm summer’s evening in a completely stunning part of Ireland.
