Self-catering accommodation Bildeston Suffolk

Bildeston is a small village in rural south Suffolk surrounded by pretty countryside for good walks. A former Roman road runs through the village and the village like many in Suffolk grew wealthy in the late 15th century on wool and the manufacture of blue broadcloth. A decline subsequently followed as the demand for its products diminished.

Nowadays it is a pleasant place to live in the country with a town square with a few essential shops and services plus good access to the larger towns for shopping and employment.

A couple of pubs provide a place for entertainment and refreshment. The Red Lion is a 15th century half-timbered Inn with an open fire, plenty of exposed oak beams, a beer garden and tons of character. The Kings Head has its own brewery with award winning beers in addition to good food and live music.

Historic places to visit near Bildeston with excellent examples medieval architecture are Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds for a good market and historic buildings, Hadleigh - a former Viking stronghold and a prosperous cloth town in the 15th century, and Sudbury where the painter Thomas Gainsborough was born. Lavenham with its wealth of half-timbered houses is just 4 miles away.
