The Location Walking and Environment
The Estate has 4 Munros (mountains over 3000 feet): Moruisg (926m), Sgurr nan Ceannaichean (915m), Maoile Lunndaidh (1005m) and Sgurr a Chaorachain (1040m) as well as numerous tops. Bidean an Eoin Deirg (1045m) and Sgurr Choinnich (979m) border the estate. The southern part of the Estate has been designated a site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI) because of the wealth and rarity of its Alpine plants.
At the heart of the Estate is the beautiful and entirely isolated Glenuig, where the remote Glenuaig lodge is set. It was used by stalkers before the advent of mechanised transport. This lodge has been renovated and is available for letting for up to eight people. There is a substantial red deer population managed in accordance with the guidance and wishes of Scottish National Heritage and the Red Deer Commission. There are red grouse, ptarmigan, mountain hare, pine martens, otters, badgers, foxes, roe deer in the woodlands and moles (!) at 2000+ feet. Considerable amounts of work, including path and bridge building, have been done in partnership with the Highland Access Project to facilitate walkers’ enjoyment of the Estate.
Things To Do - Walking and Fishing
Two rivers flow through the Estate; the River Carron to the west and the River Meig to the east. The largest Salmon caught on our stretch (of Carron)recently was 20 lbs. Fishing is best in the summer months. Fishing on all the waters is by fly only although under-12s may use other legal methods, at the discretion of the Estate stalker. Loch Scamhain has an abundance of wild brown trout and sea trout, as they pass through to the burns they spawn in. The loch is used as part of the stocking programme for the River Carron. There is a boat on the loch which can be used by arrangement. Loch Croich na Mointeich is the other loch which is situated in the heart of the Estate and is reached on foot. The wild brown trout reach 3 to 4 pounds in weight and are reputed to be wily adversaries. Other Activities There are golf courses at Lochcarron, Strathpeffer and Gairloch. There is also a fine beach at Gairloch.
Sea fishing can be organised at Shieldeg, north of Loch Carron and boats for fishing can be rented at Plockton. There are the beautiful and famous gardens at Inverewe, where the Gulf Stream warmth allows exotic plants to grow. There is also scope for fishing other nearby waters, by arrangement through the Estate stalker. Stalking The Estate is a hind forest with only a few stags in permanent residence, but a population of around 500 hinds which attracts stags from neighbouring lands in the rutting season stretching roughly from early September to mid-October, depending on conditions. Around 35-40 stags are taken each season. The estate is able to offer two 4 stag weeks and two 10 stag weeks for serious stalkers. In the 10 stag weeks, two parties can be taken out on the hill each day. A feeding programme is being instituted to encourage stags to remain on the Estate with a view to prolonging the stalking season. Hind shooting is available from the end of October through to 15 February and may be taken on a daily basis.
