Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, is not a traditional destination for country cottage holidays but it is still possible to find self catering accommodation in or near Edinburgh which very often offers a more homely environment than that available in hotels.  Edinburgh is characteristically Scottish, from the castles, to the stone used in the buildings, to the tartan in the shops and is a city with a rich heritage.  There is the world famous Edinburgh Castle, high above the city, offering amazing vantage points of the city below.  Surrounding the castle is the medieval old town with interesting historical buildings, some of which it is possible visit.  Edinburgh’s Old Town and the beautiful Georgian New town are official UNESCO World Heritage sites.
