Monreith House - Port William, Newton Stewart,

Monreith House is located in extensive grounds one mile from the fishing village of Port William. Resulting from the Gulf Stream, this area contains some of the best tropical gardens in the U.K.

The house was built by the Maxwells of Monreith at the end of the 18th c on land they have owned since the 15th c. The house contains much of the original contents, some of national importance and one of the best private libraries in Scotland collected over the last 300 years.

Accommodation:

  • The layout of the centrally heated first and second floors provides nine twin or double bedrooms with seven bathrooms, divided into flats.
  • There is a fully equipped kitchen on the first floor serving an adjacent dining/breakfast room seating about 16 and a comfortable sitting room with an open fire.
  • The ground floor has a large central hall, a small sitting room, large drawing room and library and a snooker room. These are heated by open fires which work well except for the fire in the snooker room.
  • There are ladies and gents toilets and another fully equipped kitchen serving a larger ground floor room dining room.
  • There are two self contained flats on the lower ground floor, one used by the caretaker and the other occasionally by the owner.

There are extensive walks around the Monreith Estate and nearby hills and coast line.

Within easy driving distance there is an abundance of spectacular Castles, with or without roofs, stately homes such as Dumfries House and Drumlanrig, and top quality golf courses.

Drive time from Carlisle is about two and a half hours. Drive time from Glasgow Prestwick Airport is about an hour and half. Fast trains from London Euston stop at Carlisle and connecting trains continue to Dumfries. Cars can be hired at Prestwick, Carlisle or Dumfries.
