Newton Stewart is an attractive market town in central Galloway, south west Scotland. It is surrounded by acres of forested hills with plenty of walks, scenic lochs, rivers and moors carpeted by pink heather. Visit in August to see the heather in bloom.
The Galloway Forest Park offers way-marked trails for walkers and cyclists in landscapes ranging from coastal scenery to mountain tops. There is an annual programme of events in Galloway Forest Park for outdoor enthusiasts- a Fishing Open Day on Loch Grannoch and a Duathlon entailing running and bikes. This is the ideal landscape for various outdoor pursuits in addition to walking and cycling. Other outdoor activities available:
- Fishing on the River Cree for salmon, or in lochs for brown trout
- Birdwatching - good diversity of birds, plenty of geese, waders and migrant birds during winter and spring.
- Hunting, stalking and shooting deer and game birds can be arranged in season.
Newton Stewart also has its own 18 hole golf course, leisure centre, good range of shops and places to eat.
A holiday cottage in Newton Stewart provides a good base for a few outdoor pursuits and an opportunity to tour the south west of Scotland. The people are friendly, the scenery is gorgeous - it's the perfect 'away from it all' destination in Britain.
