Aberdeenshire in the North of Scotland is also sometimes referred to as castle country.  There are around 18 castles in this part of Scotland and even more if you include ruins.  Some castles are well preserved wheras others are ruins.  Even some of the ruins are spectacular in their own way like Slains Castle near Cruden Bay which stands high on the cliff edge not far from the Bullars of Buchan.  There are also 3 whisky distilleries to visit in Aberdeenshire and even more in Banffshire.  Aberdeenshire also offers an unspoilt rural landscape and a striking coastline with sandy beaches and jagged cliffs.  For a self catering break in a reasonably remote part of Scotland with plenty of historical sights and points of interest, Aberdeenshire could be a good choice.

The Speyside town of Huntly offers visitors a mix of history, including Standing Stones, and facilities such as hotels and pubs, the Brander Museum and an 18 hole golf course. From Huntly you can enjoy walking and cycling in wonderful forest landscapes, or head to the slopes for some seasonal skiing, or even embark upon the Castle of Whiskey trails.
