A university City on the River Lune, Lancaster offers good shopping facilities and fascinating tourist attractions: Lancaster Castle associated with the Pendle witches who were hanged in Lancaster gaol in 1612, and George Fox, founder of the Quakers who spent ten years incarcerated in the castle.
Other places of interest to visit include:
- the Judge's Lodgings - home of the famous witch hunter, Thomas Covell
- the Maritime Museum
- the City Museum.
For local nearby festivals, you might wish to participate in the Glasson Maritime Weekend (held over Easter) and enjoy massed sea-song and shanty singers in addition to other 'maritime' entertainment, or perhaps visit the Wray Scarecrow Festival and Fair, held on May Bank Holiday Monday.
