Centrally located in the
Romney Marshes, the small bustling village of Lydd derives its name from the
testing of the explosive lyddite in the 19th century. Once on the coast, because
weather conditions altered the path of the River Rother in the 12th century,
Lydd now lies 3 miles inland. The 130ft tower of the 'Romney Marsh Cathedral'
survived the Second World War and visitors to the largest church in the Romney
Marshes can view the fine 15th century screen and 16th century brasses.
