About Liverpool

Liverpool, in north west England is a city associated with premier league football, the River Mersey, the Beatles and the performing arts. Its residents, known as scousers, are reputed to have a very good sense of humour; and some of Britain's best loved comedians carry the scouse accent. There is a strong link with Ireland; many Liverpudlians are descendants of Irish families that came to England looking for work during the potato famine. Liverpool is a two cathedral city, the Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals are connected by a road significantly named Hope Street. Much of the prosperity of the 18th century which resulted in many handsome buildings was built on the slave trade. Liverpool controlled 80% of the slave business in Britain in addition to a substantial amount of European slave trade. The new International Slavery Museum (August 2007) highlights the transatlantic slave trade, abolitionists and human rights movements. Following the decline of the docks in the 1970s and high levels of unemployment, the docks area and the city continue to undergo regeneration which has resulted in Unesco Heritage Status.
