Cottage Holidays in Bosham, Sussex, England

Bosham is well worth a visit for a really ‘old fashioned’ day out. Bosham (pronounced Bozz'm) is one of the most charming places in Sussex, and has been described as "Outstandingly pretty ...a gem of a place."

Bosham stands on a little peninsula between two tidal creeks at the eastern end of Chichester's inland harbour. There is no beach or sand, but when the tide is out children can play on the shingle, and look for little creatures among the stones.

The town has played an important part in the history of this country over the centuries. Inhabited by the Romans, Bosham was the sixth most important town in Sussex in the 8th Century. It is the place from which King Harold II set out on his ill-fated expedition to Normandy. The 10th Century church, built on Roman foundations, is depicted in the Bayeaux tapestry, and is very beautiful, both inside and out. The crypt particularly captured our children’s imagination!

The Craft Centre has 17 small shops of individual crafts on two floors. The ground floor is similar to an old style shopping street with flag stone floors, there are olde world wooden beams and the shops are finished in keeping with the surroundings. On this floor also, are glass cabinets with many more interesting crafts displayed. There are more shops on the first floor and a light and airy gallery with a variety of paintings by local artists. Many of the shops are working studios where the artists and crafts people are happy to discuss what they are making. The whole Walk is under one roof in a building which was originally, many years ago, a boathouse. Attractions near Bosham: Fishbourne Roman Palace - 21 miles: 30 minute drive

Fishbourne Roman Palace is internationally known, the largest Roman building on public display north of the Alps. It is very early in the Roman occupation of Britain and is often associated with Togidubnus – the local king who was an ally of Rome. Fishbourne was discovered in the early 1960's and excavated in considerable detail. Many mosaic floors, under-floor heating systems and bath suites from the north wing can be found undercover. Outside, the formal garden has been replanted following the original Roman plan. Also available is the ‘Palace Café’. Fascinating for both children and adults. Opening times vary, please check. Telephone: 01243 785859 Postcode: PO19 3QR
