Self catering country cottages in Hertfordshire, England

Some parts of Hertfordshire such as Watford are busy and very close to London in many ways but further afield there are plenty areas of Hertfordshire with glorious countryside and more peaceful towns and villages.  St Albans is an attractive historical town which is good for shopping.  There is also an interesting roman site on the outskirts of St Albans with a roman theatre and mosaics.  There is lots to see and do whilst enjoying a country cottage break.

There are many pretty towns and villages to visit including Berkhamsted and Tring which are particularly pretty market towns in Hertfordshire which the Grand Union Canal runs through.  Ashridge forest is located a few miles from Berkhamsted and forms part of the Chilterns area of outstanding natural beauty.  In Ashridge forest you may wish to cycle or walk or may even do a spot of deer spotting if you get there early enough.  The particularly pretty peaceful village of Aldbury complete with duck pond can be found at the base of Ashridge forest.   Red kites have been reintroduced to Hertfordshire and can often be spotted around Tring and the surrounding countryside.

In terms of large country houses, there are the historical houses of Hatfield House and Knebworth House that you may like to visit.  Knebworth House has a lot of attractions for children including a dinosaur trail and an adventure playground.  For those who love high energy activities there is an indoor Ski centre and an Aquasplash water park in Hemel Hempstead.
