Brignall Mill - Barnard Castle,

Brignall Mill, near Barnard Castle, is an eighteenth century stone built watermill. Offering a totally tranquil stay, the Mill stands in an idyllic spot on the River Greta. Within the old North Riding of Yorkshire the Mill, bordering the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty offers all home comforts in a Listed building which has the old waterwheel, grindstones and mill machinery incorporated into it.

The Mill is situated in a dramatic gorge carved out by the River Greta through Teesdale, a beautiful rolling landscape of sheep pastures divided by ancient stone walls and, on the tops, open moorlands. There is abundant birdlife, wildlife and unusual plants to discover in the beautiful scenery around the Mill. You can walk in any direction from the Mill on footpaths which wind through totally unspoilt and lovely countryside varying from the wooded gorge of the Greta to the wild moorland of the uplands and Dales.

There is easy access from the trans-Pennine A66, but the Mill is set remotely near the moor and is absolutely tranquil. Our nearest neighbour is the sheep farmer half a mile away and the only noise in the Gorge is the rush of the river and the sounds of hawks, owls and pheasants. We are committed to making a historic building sustainable for the future. A micro-hydro electric scheme, a heat pump, solar panels and woodburners have been installed to make the Mill warm and comfortable while being nearly self-sufficient in power. We have been audited by the Green Tourism Business Scheme and given their Gold Award. We have recently won one of only two 'outstanding' awards from Durham County Council in their Environment Awards and are shortly going to be offering a course on "How to make your Historic Building Sustainable".
