If you’re after a family self-catering holiday on the coast then head for Teignmouth in south Devon. This wonderful resort has everything you can ever want from an English seaside town. The elegant seafront with its Georgian architecture gives way to a long sandy beach, ideal for play, paddling, swimming, foraging in rock pools and walking the dog. There is a Victorian pier in the middle of the town beach that has all the traditional end of pier entertainment and provides extraordinary views of the coastline.

On the other side of the peninsula, on the river Teign estuary, is the harbour from where large vessels come and go, fishermen ply their trade and pleasure trips offer a variety of options. Here is another beach for you to explore and enjoy the colourful sight of small boats bobbing up and down while the fishermen repair their nets in the way they have done for centuries. Close by Teignmouth river beach is the lifeboat station and ferry point.

Whilst on a cottage holiday in Teignmouth, there is no shortage of shops, restaurants and cafes in the shopping area where you can browse to your heart’s content.  The Promenade is a peaceful place to sit and relish the views or take a walk and take in more of the scenery. For the serious walkers there is a coastal path and other footpaths, one that will take you all the way to Dartmoor National Park if you’re up to it. With plenty of foot access and the number of river and sea cruises available you could easily leave the car where it is for the duration of your holiday in this part of the West Country.

Whatever way you decide to travel, do be sure to cross the river and visit the village and beach at Shaldon. Try and go on a Wednesday which, between May and September, is 1785 day. The locals dress up in period costume and entertain visitors with their antics, stalls and crafts. The beach at Shaldon is a mixture of sand and shingle and is a popular water sports centre for fishing, boating and sailing. Some of the best of the south Devon coastline can be seen at Shaldon. The village has its own zoo operated by the Shaldon Wildlife Trust. By concentrating on mainly smaller endangered animals the Trust and its volunteers have expanded their knowledge and expertise and provide a high quality of care to their adopted family.
