Witchcombe Cottage - Modbury,

Witchcombe Cottage was converted from some of the old farm buildings many years ago forming what is known locally as a Devon longhouse. It has its own entrance with parking outside the door and we have recently renovated the accommodation to make a welcoming and cosy home from home which is ideally placed to explore this area of outstanding natural beauty.

On the ground floor is the entrance hallway off which is a large bathroom with a bath, separate shower, basin and WC. There is a living/dining room with comfortable leather sofas, a TV/DVD and CD player/radio. The dining area will seat up to 6 people and there is a high chair for a toddler. The kitchen looks out over the garden and is small but comprehensively equipped with an electric cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle and toasted sandwich maker. Through the living room is a utility room with washing machine, double sink and tumble dryer.

The staircase leads up to a landing, off which are two double bedrooms and a separate shower room with basin and WC. One bedroom has a super king sized bed which can also be turned into twin beds, the other bedroom has twin beds, one of which has a pull-out bed which could provide a third bed for a family of 5. A cot is also available if you are bringing a baby.

The cottage is centrally heated so you’ll be nice and snug during a mid-winter break. All bed linen, bathrobes and towels are provided and it is a smoke and pet free environment, although if you are missing your own ‘furry friends’, we have left some cuddlesome characters to keep you company and our two Springer spaniels will be only too happy to play ball with you out in the garden.

Outside we have a large garden with its own small ‘babbling brook’. It is mainly laid to lawn, perfect for a kick about with a football or a family game of rounders and there is a large gas barbeque for those balmy (or is that barmy) evenings when Dad gets out the tongs and Mum can relax with a glass of wine and enjoy being royally pampered. We also have a games room above the garage which has a full sized pool table where you can relax after a hard day at the beach over a beer or glass of wine.

The cottage is available for long and short self-catering breaks throughout the year. We look forward very much to hearing from you.

Witchcombe is a tiny hamlet in a hidden valley in the South Hams just minutes away from the busy A38 yet peacefully quiet and alive with birdsong, the humming of bees and the rustling of the wind in the trees. There has been a house here since before the Domesday Book was written and old Ordnance Survey maps mention the ‘remains of old manor’. We think our house was built sometime in the 1700s and our deeds go back to the 1820s when the farm owned all the surrounding valley.

The house is situated between the fascinating old town of Modbury with its antique shops, delicious food outlets, excellent inns and bistros and California Cross where the old coaching inn was the last stop for passengers on their way to Plymouth to sail off to the New World and the promised riches of California.

We are ideally placed to explore everywhere in South Devon. You can discover the delights of the historic market towns of Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Totnes. Slip off to the yachting haven of Salcombe or visit the well known surfing beaches of Bantham and Bigbury from where you can take the causeway or the ‘duck’ to visit the elegant Burgh Island Hotel. If you are missing the buzz of the city – go shopping in Plymouth, call in at the aquarium, stroll round the old Barbican and take a sip of Plymouth Gin or stand on the Hoe and gaze out over the wonderful natural harbour of Plymouth Sound.

Both keen walkers and those who enjoy a gentle stroll will be thoroughly spoiled for choice between the beautiful river valleys of the Dart, Avon, Erme and Plym, the rugged tors of Dartmoor with its herds of wild ponies and the challenging South West Coastal Path stretching all the way from Dartmouth down to Plymouth.

There are activities galore to occupy you during your stay. If you are looking for an action-packed family holiday, there is a wealth of exciting experience just waiting to be explored.

Travel: Totnes Station, Exeter or Plymouth Airports

Good places to visit: Take the children to Woodlands Leisure Park, Dartmoor’s Miniature Pony Centre or Sorley Tunnel near Kingsbridge. Play a round of golf at Bigbury, Dartmouth, Wrangaton or Thurlestone while the children learn to sail with the Island Cruising Club in Salcombe. Go cycling along green lanes, take a kayak down the river Dart, enjoy a peaceful afternoon’s fishing, or take a trek on horseback over Dartmoor. On the other hand, you could just chill out with a picnic on one of the beautiful beaches and listen to the cries of the gulls and the waves ebbing to and fro.

Annual Events:

Good places to eat: There’s no reason to slave over a hot stove every night. The variety and quality of the local restaurants is excellent. We recommend the Turtley Mill at Avonwick, the California Inn which recently won the Devon Dining Award from Devon Life Magazine and is about 1 1/2 miles away and The Rose & Crown at Yealmpton. The South Hams provides top quality organically grown produce and the most wonderful locally caught seafood. Tickle your taste buds with mouth watering Salcombe Dairy Icecream and forget the diet while you indulge in a Devon cream tea.

Local Sports: Swimming, Tennis, Fishing, Horse Riding, Surfing, Ballooning, Sailing.
