The beautiful historic town of Dartmouth is positioned on the hillside, with views of the River Dart estuary. This ancient seaport town has a lengthy and illustrious history. Stroll through its narrow and atmospheric streets to admire the handsome period buildings. Dartmouth's natural deep-water port still provides a harbour for boats although nowadays these tend to be private yachts for leisure purposes. A couple of centuries ago, Dartmouth harbour was one of England's busiest ports sending mariners, pilgrims and even crusaders on voyages of discovery and expedition. If you get time, visit the Britannia Royal Naval College for an insight into its marine and seafaring history.
The ancient narrow streets of Dartmouth are now home to cafes, restaurants, interesting and original shops, art galleries and delicatessens where you can stop for a bite to eat or purchase local delicacies to take back to your holiday cottage for later. he cobbled market place features colourful stalls and regular farmers markets sell fresh high quality local produce. The 2 hour Town Walking Trail includes the main historic features of interest, and of course wonderful views of the boats on the estuary.
Sailing and fishing are a popular pastime with local people and holidaymakers. The steam train ride to Paington from the Kingswear side of the estuary is also a favourite activity for visitors. The Dartmouth Regatta is held in August, the highlight being the Red Arrows display. Further afield the Little Dartmouth walk on the South West Coast Path takes in Dartmouth Castle where you can stop for a drink and admire the views out to sea, and National Trust properties at Greenway (Agatha Christie's house) and at Colyton Fischacre provide more historic and garden interest.
Dartmouth is located in the South Hams, one of Devon's most beautiful spots. In the middle of rolling hills and pictureque creeks, the town has a nautical charm and a fascinating history, reflected in its architecture. If you love the water, Dartmouth is the place for you with sailing, canoeing and wonderful beaches just around the headland. Walk and explore the town and the paths along the River Dart, or hop on a train, bus or ferry and enjoy South Devon at it's best. Short breaks available. Do contact us Tele: 01242 251270.
